District Heating Performance Analysis

As a Student Assistant at INATECH (Institute for Renewable Energy Technology, University of Freiburg), I monitor and evaluate energy consumption and system efficiency in district heating networks. The work involves Python-based data processing — importing, cleaning, and analysing sensor data from heating networks — as well as performance benchmarking and building energy assessment.

The goal is to understand how buildings behave within a district heating network: where heat losses occur, how well buildings respond to supply-temperature variations, and how to identify underperforming segments of the network.

Heat-Pump Emissions Under Variable Grid CO₂ Intensities: A Regional Study for Germany with PV and CHP

An academic research project completed as part of my M.Sc. programme at the University of Freiburg, carried out alongside my work at INATECH. The study examines how the operational CO₂ emissions of heat pumps change as the carbon intensity of the electricity grid varies — both temporally and regionally across Germany.

The analysis incorporates the effects of photovoltaic (PV) generation and combined heat and power (CHP) sources, which both influence grid carbon intensity at different times and in different regions. The research addresses a key question in the energy transition: under what grid conditions do heat pumps actually deliver emission savings relative to fossil-fuel alternatives, and how does this vary by region and season?

Earthquake-Resistant Building: Passive & Active Thermal Retrofit Strategies

A case study examining thermal retrofitting strategies for earthquake-resistant buildings in Nepal. The study analyses both passive and active retrofitting approaches, evaluating their respective impacts on building energy performance and thermal comfort.

Passive strategies assessed include insulation improvements, window upgrades, and air-tightening. Active strategies include the integration of mechanical heating and cooling systems. The study provides a comparative analysis across both approaches in the Nepali climate context.

Design & Analysis of Low-Temperature Refrigeration System

Design, thermodynamic analysis, and performance evaluation of a low-temperature refrigeration system. The project covers system sizing, thermodynamic cycle analysis (vapour-compression cycle), and component selection including compressor, condenser, expansion valve, and evaporator.

The analysis includes COP calculations, heat load assessment, and evaluation of refrigerant selection. Published on ResearchGate as part of undergraduate research at Kathmandu University.
